Falls Church residents lead the pack for remodeling expenditures in the South, averaging $6,099 annually per household, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The national average is $1,907.
Arlington residents also had deep pockets when sprucing up their homes, with homeowners shelling out an annual average of $5,801 for remodeling expenses. The District took the number three spot in the South, averaging $5,705. Alexandria rounded out the top five in the region, with a household average of $5,451. Fairfax County residents averaged a bit less, coming in at $4,983, but that’s still significantly more than the national average.
So who spends the most? Nantucket County, Mass., leads the nation (and the Northeast) for remodeling spending per home, with an average of $8,520. Marin County, Calif., is tops in the West, averaging $7,782, while Cook County, Ill., takes the prize in the Midwest with an average of $3,466.
Overall, Fairfax County residents spent an estimated $1.4 billion on home remodeling, capturing the number four spot in the South. Los Angeles lead the nation with a whopping $8.4 billion in annual spending. You can see a list of the top counties by region here.
