Mosaic District Update: Fall 2012

If you’ve been to Merrifield lately, you’ve surely noticed all the hustle and bustle. After several years of construction, the Mosaic District is coming to life.

Target has finally opened it’s doors and was swarming with shoppers this past Saturday! And there’s plenty of parking for everyone (over 2,000 spaces!). Parking is free and available on the street, as well as in two multi-level parking garages. And finding a space is a cinch. In each garage, there’s a sign which tells drivers how many available spaces are on each level. The district is also very pedestrian friendly, with lots of clearly marked crosswalks and wide sidewalks.

In addition to Target, some other stores are open for business, including Fresh Bikes. Offering high-end bikes and accessories, this is the third location for the locally owned shop, with other locations in Arlington and Bethesda. Need a racing bike? Fresh Bikes has those. More into mountain biking? Yep, they’ve got those, too, along with kids’ bikes and more.  And Fresh Bikes also has all the clothing and accessories you’ll need to go with your new ride. And if you’re not sure what you want, you can take a bike for a test ride. Fresh Bikes also offers fitting services and a maintenance shop to keep your bike in top shape.

And there’s no need to go hungry while you’re enjoying the newly opened stores, as some restaurants have opened their doors, as well. At the Pastry Xpo Cafe, you can enjoy fresh-made soups, sandwiches and salads for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and top it off with one of their delicious cupcakes or other desserts! Other dining options include sweetgreen, Matchbox Vintage Pizza, and many more.

Let’s not forget about the entertainment offered at the Mosaic District. The Angelika Mosaic movie theater opened it’s doors a few weeks ago. Offering a diverse mix of independent films, the film center also sports a cafe where you can grab some gourmet snacks and drinks. The eight-theater cineplex features stadium seating, which is assigned, so there’s no need to worry about finding a seat.

There’s still some construction going on, as more stores and restaurants will be opening their doors in the near future. Head on down to the Mosaic District to check it out…you’ll be glad you did. In the meantime, check out the photos below to see what all the fuss is about!
